Beautifying the Highway 20 Corridor
Community Mural on the Hypolimnetic Oxygenation (HOS) Tower

Project Opportunity

The upcoming Hypolimnetic Oxygenation System (HOS) tower — approximately 10 feet in diameter and 40 feet tall — presents a rare opportunity to transform essential infrastructure into a visually inspiring community landmark along Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks.

Rather than a plain industrial surface, the tower could feature a hand-painted mural that reflects the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and ecological identity of Clear Lake.

Why This Matters

  • • Scenic Corridor Enhancement

The tower will be highly visible from Highway 20. A mural would soften the industrial appearance and enhance the gateway into Clearlake Oaks.

  • • Economic & Tourism Appeal

Public art creates destination value. Similar projects in Lake County have demonstrated how painted infrastructure can become a recognizable landmark that encourages visitors to stop, photograph, and explore local businesses.

  • • Community Pride

A locally funded and locally painted mural strengthens hometown identity and reflects collaboration between businesses, residents, and the water district.

Possible Design Themes

  • • Western Grebes and Lake Life

Celebrating Clear Lake’s iconic colonial nesting birds and nationally recognized grebe populations.

  • • Tule Marsh & Shoreline Habitat

Honoring the historic tule wetlands that define Clearlake Oaks’ ecological character.

  • • Clear Lake Hitch (“Chi”)

Highlighting our endemic fish species and ongoing restoration efforts.

  • • Tribal Cultural Recognition

Potential collaboration with the Elem Indian Colony to respectfully incorporate cultural symbolism or design elements.

Implementation Concept

  • • Sponsorship through the Clearlake Oaks Business Association
  • • Selection of a local Lake County artist
  • • Coordination with the water company and project managers
  • • Community input on final design
  • • Optional interpretive plaque explaining the HOS project and featured species

A Lasting Legacy

This 40-foot structure will stand for decades. With thoughtful design, it can symbolize lake stewardship, cultural respect, ecological restoration, and community collaboration.

Clearlake Oaks has always been defined by water, wildlife, and resilience. This mural can tell that story.
